This would make the two cards dealt before those, to get the game started, ‘preflop’ cards, with the period during which they are dealt being referred to as the ‘preflop’ period.
So when we talk about a preflop strategy, we are actually talking about the strategy you can employ, during that first stage when the first two cards are dealt, preceding the flop (which is the dealing of the three middle cards). This would be in a game like Texas Holdem Poker, where player are allowed to do virtually anything, from checking holdings, to placing bets, to ‘folding’ at each of these steps – preflop, flop and the step following the flop, where the final two cards are dealt, and where the dealing of the two cards – each treated individually, makes up steps known as the ‘turn’ and the ‘river’ respectively.

And the answer to this question is that, in most cases, the ultimate destiny of a game is determined in the preflop stage, which is why you need to be on the lookout and make all the wise moves at this stage. It therefore becomes essential to have a good preflop strategy – that is, a plan on what to do in case various scenarios manifest, right from the preflop strategy. This would be contrary to what many of us imagine: that the actions they take in the preflop stage don’t matter. In actual fact, what tends to make the difference between winners and losers in many games of poker is the quality – and implementation – of the respective plans that make their preflop strategy.
